The Mayor is the Chief Executive Officer of the City, and he presides over the meetings of the Council. The City Council is the legislative and policy-making branch of the municipality and is composed of six members. During each general election, three of the six members of the City Council will stand for re-election for a four-year term of office. Members of the Council devote as much of their time to the duties of their office as an efficient and faithful discharge of duties may require. The duties they perform include the passing of ordinances, resolutions, and work done for the municipality according to the committees upon which they may be appointed by the Mayor.
Duties & Authority
Members of the Council are the legislative and policy-making branch of the municipality. City Council duties include the following:
- Grants or denies proposed zoning ordinance, zoning map and comprehensive plan amendment applications, after receiving a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning.
- Grants or denies proposed planned unit developments that are part of a preliminary plat, preliminary plat request, comprehensive plan amendment, comprehensive plan map amendment, annexation and/or rezone request after receiving a recommendation from the appropriate recommending body.
- Hears and decides on reconsideration requests.
- Hears and decide appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision, interpretation or determination made by the Planning and Zoning Commission or Hearing Examiner.
- Grants or denies proposed annexation requests, after receiving a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning.
